While we here at Hiccups try to comment on all things celebrity, we always love a good, embarrassing celebrity story — a hollywood hiccup, if you will. Kathie Lee Gifford, who hosts the Today Show’s Fourth Hour alongside co-host Hoda Kotb, made one of the BIGGEST goof-ups we’ve laid our eyes on in a while.
Yesterday, comedian Martin Short stopped by for an interview with the dynamic duo and Kathie Lee, in all of her drunken stupidity, eventually stumbled upon the topic of love and marriage. “You and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business,” Gifford said. “How many years now for you guys now?”
Nancy, Martin’s wife, died from ovarian cancer two years ago. Martin, who’s apparently a sweet gentleman, didn’t correct Kathie. Instead, he replied with “Married 36 years.” Kathie, still unaware of her insensitive mistake, continued the conversation: “But you’re still in love! “Why?” she said. Short chuckled (but in his mind we know he was thinking you are an awful person, Kathie) and said, “Cute. I’m cute.”
Eventually, someone must’ve told Kathie Lee about what she’d done because she took to Twitter later that day: “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
What do you make of this? Honestly, it doesn’t surprise me that Kathie Lee would make a mistake like this. She’s always been such a hot mess.
