Happy Birthday Kate Middleton! The Duchess Turns 31!

Happy Birthday Kate Middleton! The Duchess Turns 31!

Kate Middleton has moved into Kensington Palace, the home where Princess Diana raised Prince William and Prince Harry, and she’s also inherited Diana’s nickname, “the people’s princess.” The Duchess of Cambridge is imminently popular with the populace of the UK, but is also beloved worldwide and enjoys adulation everywhere she goes. The newly pregnant princess has impressed people around the world as she’s traveled on goodwill missions with her handsome prince and has everyone falling at her feet.

What’s so likable about Kate? Where to begin… First, she met William at college – not as some royally arranged set-up. They were friends, then lovers and then even lived together before they were married, just like average people their age. Their was no white-dress debate of is-she, isn’t she when it came to considering if the princess was “pure.” That’s such an archaic notion and demeaning to women, so it’s nice to see that it was a non-issue in this wedding.

Next, I love to see her wearing Princess Diana’s wedding ring. It’s a beautiful jewel and it looks lovely on her hand. I also like that William loved her enough to gift her the ring he grew up seeing on his beloved mother’s hand. This speaks volumes. He could have left it in the vault as a reminder of the painful loss of his mother. Instead, he’s made it into a cherished possession of his beautiful wife and has created a legacy that has surpassed the sadness.

Third, I loved her wedding gown. I went to the traveling exhibit of Princess Diana’s clothing and her wedding dress was the centerpiece. It was epic like from a real-life fairy tale. But Kate’s was modern, sleek and one that any woman would have been able to wear without feeling like she was putting on airs. She looked radiant, regal, but not stuffy or uncomfortable. And her sister Pippa’s simple bridesmaid gown echoed the impression that they are regular people.

Fourth, I love that she goes to the grocery store and runs errands like a mortal woman. She and William were living in a modest home near where he was stationed with the Royal Air Force and she behaves mostly like a normal woman with everyday responsibilities like cooking for her husband and not waiting around for servants to wait on her hand and foot. I’m sure that’s the very thing that made William comfortable with bringing her into his life – he wouldn’t have fallen for a woman who was spoiled and coddled.

Finally, I am sooo excited that she’s pregnant. A royal baby is a real blessing. I’ve got fingers crossed that it’s a girl and they will name her Diana! William and Kate are promising they’ll be raising their baby as normally as possible with hands on parenting rather than governesses and public school rather than boarding schools. And not that she could help it, but her having awful morning sickness makes me love her even more. I tossed cookies horribly for the first four months I was pregnant, so I know how awful it can be.

Happy Birthday Princess Kate! We love you!
