It isn’t often that Kim Kardashian pokes her nose into current affairs, but she did so today on Twitter. The pregnant reality star shared a link to a pledge page for Sandy Hook victims, tweeting, “Today, people in Newtown are making the #sandyhookpromise to reduce gun violence. Sign the pledge with me.” The website shares a brief statement, which reads, “I Promise to honor the 26 lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I Promise to do everything I can to encourage and support common sense solutions that make my community and our country safer from similar acts of violence.”
At first glance, it seems like Kim is getting political–the shooting has spurred huge debates about gun laws. I thought I was going to end up reporting that Kim was picking sides in an argument that doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere! Instead, I’m surprised to report that she’s done something much classier: She’s acknowledged the tragedy of not only murder, but the loss of young, beautiful children. And instead of politicizing the event, which many celebrities have been criticized for doing, she has simply promised to engage in a conversation about safety.
It may seem wildly unsuccessful–pledgers seem to have no common goal, but it’s actually the perfect move on her part. Many are worried that Kim lacks the maternal gene, and that she’ll take after her dragon lady mother Kris Jenner and pimp out her baby for money. But this move is great PR–it shows that she had a heart, and wants our collective children to be safe in the community. Of course, this could be tip of the ice berg. What do you think of Kim’s bold statement?
