Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy procedure. The actress had both her breasts removed to minimize her risk of breast cancer.
Angelina made the decision after she was tested and the doctors found she had 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. Angelina lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand to ovarian cancer at the age of 56. She did not want her children to suffer the same loss.
Angelina penned an article today in the New York Times where she revealed, “the truth is I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.”
Angelina decided to be proactive and she underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Following the procedure her risk dropped from 87% to 5%. She revealed in her article that she just completed the three month treatment. She decided to reveal her experience in hopes that her experience will help other women.
Her partner Brad Pitt was with her every step of the way. She wrote, “I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive.”
