During the boyband era in the early 2000s, it seemed like we were bombarded with the likes of N’Sync and Backstreet Boys, all of whom seemed to have pristine, squeaky-clean images with the public and their fans. Eventually, that façade faded away and were able to see the boys for their real personalities, and I think it’s suffice to say that some people didn’t like what they saw.
However, don’t expect One Direction to make the same mistake. With 1D and Wanted back on the music scene, boy bands have made a return to pop culture. However, the boys of One Direction reveal in a new interview with Glamour Magazine that they made a conscious decision not to pretend to be ‘squeaky-clean’, especially because the truth about their behavior would have come out very fast.
Zayn Malik explained, “We didn’t want to just follow the boy-band formula. We didn’t want to do any dancing. We just wanted to be five dudes in a band.” Liam Payne also added that they decided not to pretend to be something they weren’t, with Harry Styles explaining, “When you’re playing a part, eventually it goes wrong. Eventually someone’s going to see that that’s not who you are. So it’s best to be yourself from the get-go.”
Regardless, this strategy seemed to have worked out very well for the boys. To date, they remain incredibly successful and have avoided the controversies that have raged around the Wanted and Justin Bieber.
