The Hunger Games conducted its entire promotional campaign without even hinting at the love story, forget the love triangle. Fans of the books obviously knew about the Katniss – Gale – Peeta love triangle, but casual moviegoers were given the barest hint of it in the film. Instead, the movie focused on the action and survival aspects of the story, which turned out to be smart – the film ended up crossing $400 million at the domestic box office alone.
However, now that Catching Fire is weeks away from its release, director Francis Lawrence is clearly using the love triangle to appeal to more fans – a.k.a more teenage girls.
The first official TV spot released for the film is shown alongside Coldplay’s Atlas single for the film’s soundtrack, and it honestly doesn’t carry the depth that the film’s trailers and TV spots usually carry. The teaser reportedly aired before The Voice, but I could see how the tone would throw many people off.
While the spot still contained plenty of action and survival elements, as well as the added aspects of war, it definitely plays up the love triangle. Jennifer Lawrence [Katniss], Liam Hemsworth [Gale], and Josh Hutcherson [Peeta] are all involved in an interesting tug of war, with Gale and Peeta vying for Katniss’ attention. The trailer does showcase some of the romance, as well as the bond that develops between Katniss and her suitors.
Hopefully, the entire film won’t be so focused on the romance, considering the appeal of the Hunger Games books and films has always been the main story.
Are you guys excited to see the film, and did you enjoy the spot? Let us know in the comments.
