Every year, there are always major snubs in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam‘ section, and this year, the biggest name snubbed was Joan Rivers. I don’t believe that anybody in charge of putting together the In Memoriam for the Academy accidentally forgot to include Joan . If anything, it was likely a purposeful snub, but the explanation they offered up was extremely thin.
A rep for the Academy told Page Six, “Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of this year’s Oscar show. She is, however, included in our ‘In Memoriam’ gallery on Oscar.com.”
Melissa Rivers took to Joan Rivers’ Facebook page to comment on her late mother’s snub, writing, “It would have been nice, especially considering the impact she had on the awards season, but [my son] Cooper and I have been overwhelmed with support and love over my mom’s passing and we choose to focus on that.”
The ‘impact’ she had on awards season? I didn’t realize that hosting the Fashion Police amounted to impact, but I’m sure that everyone watching both the E! red carpet coverage and the Fashion Police would disagree with me.
Regardless, Joan Rivers was a major figure in entertainment, and while she pissed a lot of people off, excluding her from the list seems like a blatant oversight. Either the Academy was trying not to step on any toes by including her, or they didn’t feel that she merited an inclusion…
What do you guys think? Did they ‘forget’ to include Joan Rivers in the Oscars ‘In Memoriam’ section? Unlikely, since they managed to include a litany of marketing executives. Or did they purposefully exclude her? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
