Dakota Fanning Refuses To Do Social Media

2015 Tribeca Film Festival - "Franny" Premiere

Dakota Fanning is one of the rare, rare celebrities that doesn’t have a social media presence, and she attributes that to wanting to live life as opposed to documenting it.

In an interview with Nylon Magazine, Dakota explains, “I feel like if I did it, I’d start to measure my experiences by how good of an Instagram it’s going to turn into. And I don’t want to be living my life trying to see it all in a square, trying to get a photo. You have to set the photo up, you have to take the photo, you have to edit the photo, pick the right filter, format it, caption it–like, too much! There are so many more things I could be doing!”

And this, celebrities, is why you need to get OFF Instagram. In today’s day and age, sure, social media – and especially Twitter and Instagram – can help you promote your project. However, in addition to the risk of drunk Tweeting or drunk Instagramming, there’s always the risk of over-sharing and boring your audience. Plus, as an actor or actress, one of your greatest tools is your ability to blend into your character, and how is the public supposed to buy you as this ‘other’ person when they know everything about your personal life?

Plus, Dakota Fanning may not have worked consistently over the past few years, but she’s always chosen quality projects and it’s been EASY to buy her as that character – largely thanks to the fact that she doesn’t get embroiled up on pointless social media feuds. And that brings us to another point – without social media, there’s no risk of social media feuds and/or embarrassing yourself with ill-timed tweet or photo.
