This Is Us spoilers reveal the fans will learn more about Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) backstory in the weeks ahead. According to EW, Phylicia Rashad, who is best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, will appear as Carol, Beth’s mother. She will only appear in one episode.

When the Winter Finale ended, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth were not on good terms. Randall refused to give up his dream of a career in politics and Beth wanted him to quit. This is after, Beth overheard Randall imply he gave her a pity job in his campaign.
Beth has not been feeling like herself since she lost her job. She loved working and felt like it gave her a purpose. When she was fired and couldn’t get another job, it really depressed her.
Randall: You don't have to censor yourself. Ever. Not with me. What was your question?
