Gina Tognoni’s (Phyllis) run on The Young and the Restless has ended. The news of her departure, coupled with Michelle Stafford’s (Nina) exit from General Hospital, absolutely earns the adjective stunning. With that in mind, it’s also fitting to submit that Tognoni delivered a different Phyllis who earned respect from a discerning soap opera audience.
Tognoni’s charge was never to mimic Stafford. She wasn’t hired to replace the actor who initiated the role and produce the same style of performance.
So, comparing these actors isn’t apt. Of course, it’s always fair for any daytime fan to compare whatever one character is doing to whatever that same character did when a different actor, or actors, portrayed the fictional alter ego.
Nick: You got to go.
Phyllis: Okay. Okay, we both need to calm down, all right? This is not getting us anywhere.
Nick: No. No, you got to go. Out of this house. And out of my life. We're done.#YR pic.twitter.com/WhOaADAJRr

Y&R Spoilers– Gina Made Phyllis Role Her Own
Y&R asked Tognoni to take Phyllis into different territory than had arguably been seen before. After the intended Stafford-like debut in 2014, Tognoni’s Phyllis became softer. On that account, the actor always scored high marks. She also incorporated her own personal sense of humor into the role, which created many funny moments.
On a more serious point, devoted viewers have not forgotten that Marco’s (Peter Bergman in a dual role) demonic presence was the reason why Phyllis’ persona was dramatically impacted and altered during the years that followed.
Y&R fans also know that Tognoni entered her run on the show as the holder of two Daytime Emmy Awards (2006, 2008), that were earned for her portrayal of Dinah on the beloved Guiding Light. Her 2017 Daytime Emmy Award, for her work on Y&R, therefore came as no surprise.
Young And The Restless Spoilers– Philly Was A Fan Fav
It is quite clear that Tognoni was able to develop the ‘Philly’ pairing, initially with Burgess Jenkins (Billy) and ever since with Jason Thompson (the current Billy), in a way that was not possible during Stafford’s era, when the characters would never have been logically paired.
Tognoni offered a classy departure statement, via her Twitter feed, saying, “Five years ago I was blessed to embrace the incredible character of Phyllis Summers Abbott. I am beyond grateful for the creative experience that The Young and the Restless has given me as well as the amazing relationships I made with the cast, crew/staff, producers, and writers. I love my Genoa City family, which made it easy to give 110 percent every day. My long commutes always went smoothly because I loved where I worked and the people I worked with! My thanks to Sony Pictures Television and CBS and a special thank you to the Y&R viewers for their love and support. I wish Y&R continued success and everything it richly deserves.”
All fans surely offer Tognoni the best in her career and in life moving forward.
