Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John), Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), and Devon Hamilton (Bryton James)

Kristoff St. John’s ex-wife, former professional boxer, Mia St. John took to social media to express her disappointment in Young and the Restless writers for allegedly using her ex as a storyline and a means to make money off his memories.

Mia’s tweet was well received by most of the fans. They have supported her while she struggled to deal with his sudden passing.  However, the question is, is Y&R taking advantage of his death and having it drive emotional storylines?

Mia’s Has A Point, In A Way

St. John felt that Neil Winters’ (Kristoff St. John) will reading episode that aired on Wednesday, May 29 hit too close to home for his close friends and family.  She felt that Y&R should have been sensitive to those who loved him. And, she’s right to a point, but it isn’t quite that easy either.

“I think it’s a bit strange, morbid, that the show uses my ex-husband @kristoffstjohn1’s tragic passing as entertainment. They continually use real-life events in their scripts. I don’t know if I’m being too sensitive, but having him play an alcoholic? And now drama with the Will?” Mia posted to Twitter.

The Y&R Fans Need Closure Too

While it may be kind of disrespectful to St. John and his family to keep mentioning Neil on the show, it is also a true testament to the legacy he left on the show.  The viewers need closure too. And, if the writers hadn’t written a will reading episode, the fans would ask who got Neil’s estate.

This is a case of Y&R cannot win.  If they don’t mention Neil’s will the fans will claim that the show is trying to erase him off the show.  If they do, they aren’t respecting his family.  They cannot win in this circumstance.

Was It Too Much For Y&R To Write Neil As An Achololic?

Another one of his ex-wife’s accusations was Y&R hit too close to home by writing Neil as an alcoholic.  She thinks that it may have been too much for him to play the role on the show and then live with the reality of living the same life off screen.

Mia believes Y&R is using Kristoff’s death to bring in viewers and to capitalize off it. That could be true, but it seems much more likely the writers are giving the fans closure and a way to grieve for Neil and Kristoff.  It’s a sad situation all around.
