Eastenders Spoilers: Kate Oates Explains Ben And Callum’s Scenes TogetherIt wasn’t supposed to work out this way, now was it? Eastenders executive producer Kate Oates explains why she decided to put two controversial characters, Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) and Callum Highway (Tony Clay) in scenes together, knowing all too well that Callum has been struggling with his sexuality in his developing relationship with Ben. It’s been a huge talking point among Eastenders fans for a very long time, mostly because it’s something that many viewers never saw coming! Here’s what you need to know.

Callum’s Sexuality

At first Callum didn’t show many signs of being at odds with his emotions and his sexuality and that’s because his character was never meant to be this way at first. In fact, it wasn’t part of the original plan. Kate Oates says that she decided to take this sudden turn after realizing that things wouldn’t work out between Callum and Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty).

Kate told Britain’s Express.co.uk in an interview that Callum and Whitney’s relationship at first felt very new and young and for her it felt strange for them to try and want to have a baby at their age. She said, “In terms of Callum’s struggle with his sexuality, no that wasn’t on the cards when I arrived. In fact, on the cards was Halfway and Whitney trying for a baby — and that being the struggle — and I just didn’t believe it as much as I might’ve done because the dynamic of the relationship — it felt really strange.”

What’s Next For Callum?

Kate added that she saw a huge potential to develop Callum further. Calling him a “blank canvas: she knew that there was an internal struggle inside of him that she could work with. The talented writer added, “I think Whitney was his first, he’d been in the army but I didn’t understand why he’d left, he always felt a bit like a square peg. It just felt like he was somebody who didn’t really know fully who he was — or was running away from who he was.”

Eastenders spoilers also tease that there is going to be a huge fight between Callum and Ben as the two of them end up throwing their fists at one another. Callum will lash out at Ben in an explosive fight, leaving him beaten, battered and bloodied on the floor. You won’t want to miss any of this!
