While Meghan Markle certainly has been getting a lot of negative criticism by the press in recent months, there’s at least one person in her life that always has her back. That person of course is her best friend Serena Williams.
The tennis pro recently went on the record to not only sing Markle’s praises, but also let the world know that she appreciates all of the support the Duchess of Sussex has given her, both on and off the court. Here’s what you need to know.
In a new interview with Access Hollywood, Williams said that Meghan Markle is simply “the best person” she knows. The Duchess of Sussex recently flew to New York from London to help support Serena in the US Open Women’s Finals.
Serena Williams Calls Meghan Markle The Best Person She Knows
Meghan made the trip – flying on a commercial plan, no less – to help cheer on her good friend, who was playing in the finals against Canadian Bianca Andreeschu. Meghan left her husband Prince Harry and their four-month-old tot Archie Harrison behind for the quick jaunt across the pond.
“She’s the best person I know and the nicest and sweetest friend and she’s just the greatest person,” Williams said.
It’s a good thing that she went on the record to defend Markle, as many different media outlets from both side of the pond have been heavily criticizing both her and her husband Prince Harry. The couple were blasted for taking several private jet trips this summer despite being celebrity “eco-warriors” who like to encourage royal fans to think about the environment when making travel plans.

The Duchess of Sussex was also criticized for taking her trip to New York City and not visiting the Queen at her Balmoral Estate in Scotland. A lot of royal observers see the move as a snub towards the Queen.
Of course, Meghan Markle herself has not made any comments about the criticism or her travel plans for that matter but at this point it’s unlikely anything will be said.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s next stop will be in Africa later this month. The couple plan on bringing their adorable 4-month-old baby Archie Harrison for the trip, too. Keep up with Hollywood Hiccups for all the latest royal news right here!
