The Young And The Restless Spoilers: Melissa Claire Egan Talks Chelsea’s Mental Breakdown– How CBS Made Sure They Got It Right
The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that Melissa Claire Egan was honored and terrified of Chelsea Lawson’s suicidal storyline. Head Writer Josh Griffith wanted to ensure they got the storyline right, so they consulted with a psychiatrist to ensure the storyline rang true.
Egan shared that Griffith called her into his office a few months back. He revealed that Chelsea would be going through a very dark time, and she would attempt suicide. He wanted her to know in advance so she could see where the storyline would end up and see the bigger picture.
The Young And The Restless Spoilers —Melissa Felt Honored To Share This Story
Although she was saddened to hear what her character would go through, she felt honored to tell the story because it is important and affects so many of the show’s viewers.
“So many people these days are struggling with depression, anxiety, and mental health issues. I’m proud we are shining a light on that. Josh [Griffith] wanted this to be a real story and not sensationalize such a sensitive and serious subject,” Melissa Claire Egan shared with Soap Opera Digest.
As she prepared to tackle this storyline, Egan made sure she didn’t “act over the top” and was more of a person who wasn’t in a good headspace and not thinking clearly.
Y&R Spoilers —CBS Consulted With A Psychiatrist
CBS wanted to make sure the storyline was accurate, so they hired a psychiatrist, Dr. Dan Reidenberg, to offer advice and insight into the most accurate way to portray Chelsea’s mental decline.
“Dr. Reidenberg has been so incredible as a consultant to the writers and to me. I have FaceTimed and texted with him many times, and he has provided a plethora of information. It was fascinating and heartbreaking to talk to him because I wanted to get into the mindset of someone in such much pain and just wanted to escape it. I’ve learned that depression is an illness that you sometimes can’t see past, and suicide can seem like your only option,” Egan shared.
Melissa said she loves the fact that Chelsea doesn’t bounce back. Y&R viewers will see her recovery at a slow pace. She will talk to her doctor over several episodes and works hard to rebuild her life. She hopes the fans notice how responsible the storyline is and how it mirrors the reality of the illness.
